In April 2016, the Sani Foundation held its first ever Kopa Film Festival, in which all featured films had as their protagonists, individuals with intellectual disabilities. The festival was a 3 days event that attracted over 500 viewers from different social-economic and cultural backgrounds. It was the first intellectual disability festival in Zambia and portrayed the diverse population that they make up; featuring people with IDs not just as ‘victims’ of disability, but as individuals who have the ability to actively and positively contribute to society. Following the overwhelming success and positive responses that the festival received, we plan to scale up our outreach to conduct community screenings in various neighbourhoods within Lusaka.
